Venice, the Goldolier’s Twist

Rio del Vin, Venice, Italy

Behind the scene

Venice is a city of water, where the gondola has been the main means of transportation for centuries. The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat, propelled by a gondolier who stands on the stern and uses a single oar to steer and move. The gondola is well suited to the conditions of the Venetian lagoon, as it can navigate the narrow canals and shallow waters.

The history of the gondola dates back to the 11th century, when it was first mentioned by name in a document. Since then, the gondola has undergone many changes in shape, size, color and decoration, reflecting the social and cultural evolution of Venice. The gondola was once a symbol of wealth and power, reserved for the nobility and the clergy, who adorned it with lavish ornaments and accessories. The gondola was also a witness of historical events, such as the meetings between the Doge and foreign dignitaries, or the romantic escapades of Casanova.

Today, the gondola is mostly used for tourism, offering visitors a unique way to experience the beauty and charm of Venice. There are about 400 licensed gondoliers in Venice, who wear the traditional striped shirt and straw hat, and sometimes sing songs or tell stories to their passengers. The gondola ride is a must-do for anyone who visits Venice, as it allows to see the city from a different perspective, and to appreciate its architecture, art and history.

The photograph by Manuel Busetto captures the essence of Venice and the gondola, using the artistic blur technique. The photograph is rich in colors and looks like an impressionist painting. The gondolier is the focal point of the image, while the background is blurred by the motion of the boat. The blur creates a sense of movement and dynamism, as well as a contrast between the sharpness of the gondolier and the softness of the surroundings. The photograph is a work of art that pays tribute to a masterpiece of history and craftsmanship.
